As one of the most popular PC games today, League of Legends is reshaping PC gaming and core gamers perception of virtual goods. Riot Games (named a Top 30 developer by Game Developer Magazine), the publisher and developer of League of Legends, is experiencing a period of rapid growth, doubling the size of the company in the past year. With over 4 MM players in their debut title across the US and Europe, and numerous awards (including IGN.com’s Readers' Choice for Best Multiplayer Game for League of Legends), Riot Games has also pioneered an innovative live development model and is looking to expand its production capabilities. As part of that growth, we have a great opportunity for a Creative Design Intern in our Los Angeles, CA office.  This opportunity is best suited for a consummate online gamer who gets along easily with others, is both rational AND highly creative, and feels that while they have a lot to contribute, they have far more to learn.  Applicants must also be able to remain positive and work effectively and efficiently in a team-oriented environment. Responsibilities (to include but not limited to): Work closely with designers and producers to create story development content for the League of Legends. Learn and gain proficiency in the fundamentals of design, both creative and technical. Perform creative writing tasks within the League of Legends IP. Perform editing tasks, both thematic and copy-editing Collaborate with producers, engineers, and quality assurance staff to support the implementation of creative design features. Perform various creative design research tasks (comparative story analysis, cultural research for champion development, organizing creative documents, etc.) Assist fellow designers with early-stage play balance. Requirements Widely played with all kinds of games, along with an ability to articulate clearly what is strong/weak about the design of existing games. Written 250 pages worth of any style of creative writing – fiction, non-fiction, plays, screenwriting, etc. Must be able to write in an environment not always suited to quiet thinking, and must be able to work with frequent interruptions. A creative mind that is able to generate ideas with blue-sky thinking that respects and understands the needs of the technical. Broadly aware of different types of IP – A good candidate has experienced a lot of different, media types, genres and styles.  For example, a great candidate might be an encyclopedia on comic and game IPs, but know a lot about sci-fi and fantasy novels, be an expert on kung fu movies, and know a moderate amount about anime, US TV and movies. Self-starter who does really cool stuff, all the while remembering to engage people for advice if it’s cool CRAZY stuff. Openness to feedback and critique; desire to learn; humility. Must be detail oriented and able to test own work thoroughly. Must have excellent organizational and communication (verbal & written) skills. Positive, team-oriented attitude. Additional forms of creative experience (2D art, 3D art, music, theater) are a plus. In-progress/complete Bachelors degree or have equivalent experience. US work authorization or US student visa (i.e. only valid for unpaid educational internship). Past Riot Games interns have accomplished, among other things: Design and implementation of Cryophoenix, Gemknight, Rammus and Veigar characters. The biographies of numerous LoL champions. Game pacing overhauls of damage rates in League of Legends. Defined and developed significant parts of LoL’s intellectual property. Extensive tooltip writing (well, not all the tasks can be especially fun, but this is actually a really key skill…) Compensation: For University Interns: course credit & no financial compensation when allowed by law. For Paid Interns: level of compensation depends upon qualifications. Qualification Points: Below is a brief list of qualifications, with each bullet worth 1 point. We’re looking for candidates who can easily say they have 4 points. Please see if you have 4 points currently, and list, very briefly, which qualifications you meet and how. If you do not have 4 points, your application will be rejected automatically. Completed 4-year college degree OR expected completion of a 4-year college degree in English, Creative Writing, Communications, or a game industry-specific topic within 1 year Attendance at (or diploma from) a top tier university (CMU, Harvard, Stanford, UCLA, Columbia, MIT, etc) OR 3.75+ GPA at other university Completed writing a novel, a screenplay, a play, or 5 short stories Published your work in a literary journal Show us your work that is purchasable from a traditional book retailer or online (Amazon, for example) Completed a graduate degree Worked on game mods and/or a video game Possess an online portfolio where we can see your creative work Show us games you have shipped that are easily accessible commercially, and you can point us to them Possess deep knowledge of a specific game’s intellectual property, at least 5000 lifetime hours of video game play, at least 1000 hours of multiplayer gaming experience, and passing familiarity with at least 100 games Professional game industry experience Professional game industry experience at a top developer (e.g. Blizzard, Valve, Infinity Ward, Bungie, Naughty Dog, Insomniac, Arena.net, etc) OR 3+ years of professional game industry experience Final Notes! 250 word analysis of a game’s intellectual property you found compelling. Explain briefly and CLEARLY what you thought the game did well, what you think the game did poorly, and why you think it is a fun game. Submissions over the word limit will be rejected. Extra credit: 300 word biography nugget on an existing League of Legends champion. Submissions over the word limit will be rejected. List of your 10 favorite games of all time.
